Flip Vertically

Mirror your photo through the horizontal axis - top moves to bottom, but left and right stay in place. Different from a 180° rotation, useful for reflections.

Drag & drop or browse to upload. JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC up to 40 MB.

  2. 2

    We flip it vertically

The image is mirrored top-to-bottom in your browser - what was at the top now appears at the bottom. Left and right stay where they are.

When to use it

  • Reflection effects for design - flipping a subject vertically to fake a water-surface mirror
  • Fixing scans of film negatives that loaded with the wrong vertical orientation
  • Creating symmetric top-and-bottom layouts for thumbnails or banners
  • Correcting screenshots from emulators that render with inverted Y-axis
  • Astronomy or microscopy images that need flipping to match a published reference

Frequently asked questions

Does this upload my photo to a server?
No. The transform runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image data never leaves your device, so the tool works offline once the page is loaded and there's no privacy risk.
Vertical flip vs 180° rotation - what's the difference?
Vertical flip mirrors only the Y-axis (top-bottom swap, but text on the photo will still read forward). 180° rotation swaps BOTH axes (text reads backward, like in a mirror held above the photo). Pick vertical flip for reflection effects, 180° to fully invert.
Is vertical flip the same as horizontal flip?
No. Horizontal flip mirrors the X-axis (left-right swap, like looking in a mirror). Vertical flip mirrors the Y-axis (top-bottom swap, like looking down into water). Different axes, different results.
Why use vertical flip for reflections?
Real water reflections are upside-down but not mirrored sideways. Vertical flip preserves the left-right orientation while inverting the top-bottom one - exactly the geometry of a still-water reflection. Pair it with reduced opacity in our editor for a believable effect.
Does flipping reduce quality?
Not visually. The flip itself is a lossless pixel rearrangement. JPG re-encoding adds minor compression but keeps the visual quality identical to the source.
Is there a file size limit?
Yes - 40 MB per image. Most phone photos are well under this limit. If your file is larger, compress it first with our compress tool.
