How it works

  1. 1

    Drop your photo

Drag & drop or browse to upload. JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC up to 40 MB. We pre-place a default ellipse in the centre - move it onto a face.

  2. 2

Cover each face with an ellipse

Drag to position over a face, corner handles to resize. Add another ellipse for each additional face. The ellipse shape covers heads naturally without cutting off ears or hair.

  3. 3

    Tune intensity, save

Slider 2-80 px. 20-40 px gives full unrecognisability while still reading as 'a face'. Save in any format - blur is baked into the output.

Why use this online tool

Ellipse default for natural face shape

Faces are roughly oval-shaped, so an elliptical mask covers a head naturally - no awkward rectangle borders cutting through hair, ears, or shoulders.

Multi-face support

Drag multiple ellipses to cover everyone in a group photo. Each blurs independently with the same intensity setting.

Strong privacy guarantee

Gaussian blur at 30+ px is irreversible - facial features are genuinely lost. Safe for posting children's photos, witness photos, group shots where some people didn't consent.

Free, browser-side

Photo never leaves your device. No upload, no signup, no per-face cost. Output has no watermark.

When to use it

  • Hiding bystanders' faces in event / venue photos before posting publicly
  • Protecting children's faces in school / family photos shared online
  • Witness protection in journalism photos and news media images
  • Removing identifiable people from real estate / location listings
  • Sharing group photos publicly while respecting some attendees' privacy
  • Sales / marketing material that needs to anonymise faces before A/B testing

Frequently asked questions

Will the blurred face be reversible?
At 30+ px Gaussian blur, no - facial features are mathematically destroyed. For maximum security on sensitive material (witness protection, court evidence), use our pixelate-face-in-photo tool with 30+ px block size, or fill the area with a solid colour in the AI editor.
Can I blur multiple faces in a group photo?
Yes - drag a separate ellipse over each face. There's no cap on regions; we've tested with 15+ ellipses on a single 12 MP group photo without performance issues.
Why is the default shape an ellipse instead of rectangle?
Faces are oval-shaped. An elliptical mask covers a head naturally without leaving sharp rectangle borders that cut through hair, ears, or shoulders. Ellipse looks more polished and the blur edge feels less artificial.
Does this auto-detect faces?
Not in this tool - it's manual. Auto face detection (using on-device ML) is on our roadmap as a separate /features/blur-faces-automatically page. Manual selection takes ~5 seconds per face and gives you full control over what gets covered.
Does this upload my photo?
No. Face blur runs entirely in your browser using a manual Gaussian blur algorithm. Your photo (and the faces in it) never leave your device.
