Why use this online tool

Pure single-axis lift

Just lifts dark pixels toward grey - no warm tint, no desaturation. Cleaner than the full Fade preset filter when you want a minimal, controllable softening.

Live preview

Drag the slider and see the result update instantly. No 'apply' click - find the exact value that works for your photo, then save.

100% browser-side

The adjustment runs on a Canvas in your browser. Your photo never leaves your device - no upload, no server, no privacy risk.

Free, no watermark

Unlimited adjustments, no signup, no overlay on the output.

When to use it

  • Soft / dreamy editorial portraits where harsh shadows feel too aggressive
  • Wedding photo edits aiming for the modern matte / faded film look
  • Lifestyle photography that should feel airy and gentle
  • Reducing the visual weight of dark backgrounds without re-lighting
  • Subtle lo-fi feel for social posts without the heavier warm cast of vintage / fade filters

Frequently asked questions

Does this upload my photo to a server?
No. The adjustment runs entirely in your browser using direct ImageData pixel manipulation. Your image never leaves your device.
Fade slider vs the Fade filter preset?
The Fade preset filter is a heavier composite - shadow lift PLUS highlight compression PLUS warm tint PLUS reduced saturation. The fade slider here is just shadow lift (one axis), so it's cleaner and more controllable when you want minimal effect or to stack with other adjustments.
Will fade make my photo look washed out?
Slightly - that's the intent. At 100% the deepest blacks lift toward mid-grey. For soft editorial polish, 30-50 is usually plenty. Push higher only when going for a stylised matte / film look.
Can I get a true matte film look?
Combine fade with low contrast (-15 to -25) and slight desaturation (-10 to -15) for a balanced matte film look - similar to the matte preset filter, but tuned to your photo. Use our AI editor to stack adjustments side-by-side.
Can I reset to the original?
Yes - drop the slider to 0 (or whichever value means 'no change' for this control) to see the original. The source is never modified - the tool always operates on a copy.
Can I stack multiple adjustments?
In this widget, one slider at a time. For stacked edits (e.g. brightness + contrast + saturation), use our AI editor where multiple adjustments live side-by-side as non-destructive layers.
